Kathy Lindberg is a board-certifed music therapist in Ohio. She received her BA in Music Therapy from The College of Wooster, in Wooster, OH and completed her clinical internship training at Forbes Health Center in Pittsburgh, PA. During that time she worked with older adults, psychiatric children and adults, and those who were terminally ill.
Kathy began practicing music therapy in 1991. During her career she has helped a wide variety of individuals better themselves and their lives through music. Populations with which she has worked include trauma survivors, autistic children, the mentally retarded and developmentally delayed (MRDD), the terminally ill, and traumatic brain injury patients (TBI). Kathy currently works with older adults suffering from dementia, Alzheimer's Disease and other developmental delays.
In addition to providing direct music therapy services, Kathy has a studio of music students taking both traditional and adaptive music lessons. She also provides professional presentations and workshops around the country.
In 2008 Kathy founded her company, Melisma Music Therapy in order to provide quality music therapy, workshops, presentations, and music lessons to people throughout Ohio. The company is built on the belief that within every person, no matter what the challenges, there is a healthy and creative spirit wanting to express itself and music therapy is the means of tapping this creative self and giving it a voice. The result is promoting emotional, physical, psychological, and spiritual health as well as improving the quality of life of those served.
(Wooster, Ohio October 11, 2010) The new Melisma Music Therapy Services website provides information for senior centers considering and looking to offer music therapy services to their residents and ongoing training and information for music therapists.
“The new Melisma Music Therapy website offers a variety of free tools and resources for senior centers and therapists to help them provide successful music therapy programs,” said owner Kathy Lindberg, MT-BC. “Creating this website has been a long time process to bring together the latest in articles, tools and step-by-step instructions for bringing music to life for seniors and in particular those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.”
How does music therapy help Alzheimer’s and patients with dementia? Music memory is preserved better than verbal memory, because music, unlike language, is not seated in a specific area of the brain but is processed across many parts. “Music therapy has made a difference in the lives of our residents at Majora Lane,” says Jennifer Heller, Guest Relations/Admissions manager for Majora Lane Center. “Kathy works with all cognitive levels to meet whatever need they may have. Group and individual sessions are conducted based on the resident’s individual plan. Whether it is an individual with Alzheimer’s that hasn’t spoken any noticeable words but just sang a song from start to finish or an individual that has just written a song about their childhood and has boosted their self esteem, music therapy works on all levels.”
The Melisma Music Therapy website offers a series of articles and tools designed to help a senior care facility bring music therapy to their residents with little or no effort. For board-certified music therapists, the website is a valuable resource which also includes job opportunity information and instructions for developing and opening their own practice.
Included in the Melisma Music Therapy website is a frequently updated blog “Music Therapy Musings” providing video and audio examples of how music is used to enrich the lives of our older population. Visit www.melismamusictherapy.com to check out this new online resource.
